When you start the VM, the adapter should "unplug" from the host OS and the guest should be able to see it directly. In the VBox manager, select the VM and go to Settings -> USB then add a new USB filter for the WiFi adapter. If it's a USB adapter, your best bet would be to use the USB passthrough functionality in VirtualBox then load the appropriate driver for the USB adapter in Linux.
